Learn how to edit documents on Confluence. No downloads and re-uploads are required. |
About the edit
We'll cover the different ways to edit your documents in Confluence using the Team Files SharePoint Connector app, expanding the topics on the file manager page.
While some files are preview-only, like images and PDF files, when it comes to Office documents, you can also edit the most popular formats right inside Confluence, helping you build your single source of truth. Without downloading to edit and re-uploading multiple copies or locking other people out while you edit the document.
This way, it's easy to use your Confluence pages as your one source of truth, with content always accessible, updated, and editable.
Editing a Microsoft, Google, or OpenOffice Document
It's possible to edit a document from the file manager, including the full-screen preview. You can also edit documents that are attached to your pages.
Edit button
Regardless of the context, you can edit documents by clicking the Edit button (1). A new tab opens, where the appropriate editor opens, and in a few seconds, you can edit your document.
When editing a Microsoft Office document, spreadsheet, or presentation, you and your team can work together, as the Microsoft 365 editor supports real-time collaboration, so there are no file lockdowns. There's also an autosave feature, so when you finish, you can close the tab.
If you're using Google Drive, you can also edit Google Drive documents using the Google Docs editor, supporting real-time collaboration and autosave.
Open Office documents work the same way as Microsoft Office documents, using the Microsoft 365 editor, but do not support real-time collaboration.
Real-time collaboration
As mentioned before, Microsoft Office and Google Documents support real-time collaboration, and it's effortless to use.
Start editing a document that is attached to a page or even from the file manager. When another person clicks to edit the same document, the editor creates a collaboration session seamlessly. You can continue to edit the document as before and leave it at any time by closing the browser tab.

We support preview of the old formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt), but only the new formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) can be edited using Microsoft 365 editor. This is a Microsoft 365 restriction as the old formats are considered legacy. Also, some complex Word documents or some Excel spreadsheets with macros may not be possible to edit due to Microsoft limitations. |
Wrap up
That's all for editing documents. Did you know you can also create new documents on the file manager?
