About the preview and edit
This page will cover how to preview and edit Jira attachments on your issues using the Team Files app without downloading files and reuploading multiple copies. You can preview and edit the most common Office document formats, PDF documents, and popular image formats.
Preview Files and Documents with Team Files
When your Jira issue has native attachments, they appear automatically in Team Files when you add the app to the issue.
The Team Files app supports a full-screen preview and an inline preview, where you can actually see and read the content, unlike Jira’s thumbnails. Click the preview button or name of the file you want to open the preview for the full-screen preview or see the inline preview by clicking the disclosure button.
Edit Microsoft Office Files
You can edit Microsoft Office files directly from your issues. There is no need to download them to your computer or re-upload multiple copies.
To edit a file, click the edit button in the file details or the full-screen preview header. The editor has an autosave feature, so you can close the tab when you finish.

A real-time co-edit session will start if two or more users click Edit simultaneously. |
Open Office files are also supported and work the same way as Microsoft Office documents, using the Microsoft 365 editor, but do not support real-time collaboration.
Layout options
All the layout options from Team Files are now available for your Jira Native Attachments, greatly expanding what’s possible in Jira. You can select the option to open the preview immediately when you open a Jira issue, customize the preview area, change the header style, or hide it completely. Check Customizing the layout for more details.
Turning off the support for Jira Native Attachments
If you don’t want to use this feature, you can turn off the option in the “Layout” menu.
Click the “Layout” button
Click the toggle to turn the option off.
Click the “Save” button to apply the changes.
Admins can also turn it off for all issues in the Admin settings. For more details, please check the Admin settings documentation.

We support preview of the old formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt), but only the new formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) can be edited using Microsoft 365 editor. This is a Microsoft 365 restriction as the old formats are considered legacy. Also, some complex Word documents or some Excel spreadsheets with macros may not be possible to edit due to Microsoft limitations. |
