About the preview and edit

This page will cover how to preview and edit Jira native attachments files on your issues using the Team Files app .The Team Files app lets you preview and edit files on your issueswithout downloading files and reuploading multiple copies. You can preview and edit the most common Office document formats and preview , PDF documents, and popular image formats.

When your Jira issue has native attachments, they appear automatically in Team Files when you add the app to the issue.

You can preview all your Jira Native Attachments using The Team Files , which app supports a full-screen preview and an inline preview, where you can actually see and read the content, unlike Jira’s thumbnails. Click the icon preview button or name of the file you want to open the preview for the full-screen preview or see the inline preview by clicking the disclosure button.


Edit Microsoft Office Files

You can edit Microsoft Office files directly from your issues. No There is no need to download them to your computer or re-uploading upload multiple copies.

To edit a file, click the edit button from in the file details or the full-screen preview header. There's also The editor has an autosave feature, so you can close the tab when you finish.

A real-time co-edit session will start if two or more users click Edit simultaneously.

Open Office files are also supported and work the same way as Microsoft Office documents, using the Microsoft 365 editor, but do not support real-time collaboration.


Layout options

All the layout options from Team Files are now available for your Jira Native Attachments, greatly expanding what’s possible in Jira. You can select the option to open the preview immediately when you open a Jira issue, customize the preview area, change the header style, or hide it completely. Check Customizing the layout for more details.

Disabling

Turning off the support for Jira Native Attachments

If you don’t want to use this feature for any reason, you can disable turn off the option in the “Layout” menu.

  1. Click the “Layout” button

  2. Click the toggle to turn the option off.

  3. Click the “Save” button to apply the changes.

Admins can also turn it off for all issues in the Admin settings. For more details, please check the Admin settings documentation.



Supported file formats for preview

  • Images: GIF, JPG, JPEG, and PNG

  • PDF documents (including password-protected files) 

  • Microsoft Office documents: DOC, DOCX, DOCM, XLS, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, PPT, PPTX, PPTM, PPS, PPSX, PPSM

  • Microsoft Office templates: DOT, DOTX, DOTM, POT, POTX, and POTM

  • Open Office documents: ODT, ODS, and ODP

  • Rich text documents (RTF)

The Team Files app can preview many popular file types, but not all of them. When you try to preview a file type not specified above, the preview window will open with the message "No preview available" and a "Download" button so that you can open it with your desktop apps

Supported file formats for edit

  • Microsoft Office documents: DOCX, DOCM, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, PPTX, and PPSX

  • Microsoft Office templates: DOT, DOTX, DOTM, POT, POTX, and POTM

  • Open Office documents: ODT, ODS, and ODP

Info

We support preview of the old formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt), but only the new formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) can be edited using Microsoft 365 editor. This is a Microsoft 365 restriction as the old formats are considered legacy. Also, some complex Word documents or some Excel spreadsheets with macros may not be possible to edit due to Microsoft limitations.
