Edit documents [GD JC]
Learn how-to documents on Jira with the Google Drive Connector app.
About the edit
We'll cover the different ways to edit your documents on Jira using the Google Drive Connector app, expanding the topics presented on the page about the file manager.
While some files are preview-only, like images and PDFs, when it comes to Office files, you can also edit the most popular formats right inside Jira, helping you build your single source of truth. Without downloading to edit and re-uploading multiple copies or locking other people out while you edit the document.
This way, your Jira issues can easily serve as your one source of truth, with content always accessible, updated, and editable.
Editing a Microsoft, Google, or OpenOffice file
You can edit an Office file from the file manager, including the full-screen preview, and when they’re attached to your issues.
Edit button
Regardless of the context, you can edit documents by clicking the Edit button. A new tab opens, where the appropriate editor opens, and you can edit your document in a few seconds.
You and your team can work together when editing a Microsoft Office document, spreadsheet, or presentation. The Microsoft 365 editor supports real-time collaboration, so there are no file lockdowns. There's also an autosave feature, so you can close the tab when you finish.
You can also edit Google Docs files using the Google Docs editor, supporting real-time collaboration and autosave.
Open Office documents work the same way as Microsoft Office documents, using the Microsoft 365 editor, but do not support real-time collaboration.
Real-time collaboration
As mentioned before, Microsoft Office and Google Docs files support real-time collaboration.
You can start editing a document attached to a page or from the file manager. The editor seamlessly creates a collaboration session when another person clicks to edit the same document. You can continue to edit the document as before and leave it anytime by closing the browser tab.
Supported file formats for edit
Microsoft Office documents: DOCX, DOCM, XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, PPTX, and PPSX
Microsoft Office templates: DOT, DOTX, DOTM, POT, POTX, and POTM
Microsoft Visio files (VSDX)
Open Office documents: ODT, ODS, and ODP
Google documents, sheets, and slides
We support preview of the old formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt), but only the new formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) can be edited using Microsoft 365 editor. This is a Microsoft 365 restriction as the old formats are considered legacy. Also, some complex Word documents or some Excel spreadsheets with macros may not be possible to edit due to Microsoft limitations.
Wrap up
That's all for editing documents. Did you know you can also create new documents on the file manager?
